context: i am in a break out room on a deep canvassing virtual training, alone because the person i'd been partnered with disappeared. the prompt was what brought me to this training, and my answer is that I believe humanity can be Reminded of empathy and the importance of holding each other in community.
i have been struggling with this query now more than ever. in this current day and age, the lines that have been drawn between who gets to have Rights, who gets to be Considered, who gets to be treated with Dignity and Respect and basic decency feels like it is being contested, on the basis of arbitrary, learned bigotry.
it has been over a year since Roe vs. Wade was Overturned. it has been years of legislative attacks on specifically Trans and Gender Non-Conforming individuals over 550. the depth of misunderstanding, the throes of blatant hatred because the American Dream is individualism. the American Dream is to exploit others for the comfort of ourselves. the American Dream is to dehumanize those we can classify as "Other", to create the illusion of enough Difference to deem their struggles, their hardships, their Humanity somehow Less valid.
i am livid. i am tired. i am hollowed out.
i Want to believe that we as a people, that we as humanity can do better. but it's proving increasingly more and more difficult.
the world is on fire. the world has been on fire, but now we can feel it. the global south is bearing the Brunt of humanity's Greed. our current systems are not equipped to handle the influx.
for people in the line of work, of 'social justice' of 'activism' - how do you Hold those who have harmed and those who have been harmed? do you hold them both, or are some Cast Out? what does restorative and transformative justice truly look like, in Action?
